It’s Not About Character – It’s About Loss of Control
Many people living with sugar addiction have tried to quit more times than they can count. With strong willpower, new promises, and great hope. Yet the loss of control keeps coming back. Not because you are weak — but because sugar addiction is a disease.
As everyday life slowly creeps back in after holidays and New Year’s resolutions, many people recognize the same old patterns. What felt hopeful just days ago begins to slip through your fingers.
Sometimes it doesn’t even take days.
Sometimes just hours.
Ibland bara timmar.
Cravings take over.
Control disappears.
And defeat feels inevitable.
Guilt comes quickly.
Self-esteem drops.
The inner voice turns harsh, judgmental, and unforgiving.
Why can’t I just get a grip?
What is wrong with me?
Everyone else seems to manage this.
We want to be very clear:
Sugar addiction is not about poor character, weak willpower, or lack of discipline.
One of the core features of addiction is loss of control..
It is also one of the diagnostic criteria.
Sugar and flour act like drugs in the brain. When the addiction is active, the brain’s reward system is affected, impulse control is impaired, and the ability to consider consequences is reduced. Cravings can become so strong that resisting feels completely impossible.
In that moment, it is not a free choice —
even if it often feels that way afterward.
Another part of the disease is how it constantly looks for ways to continue.
You make promises to yourself again and again:
I’ll just have one piece.
I’ll just treat myself today.
Tomorrow I’ll start over.
On Monday I’ll deal with it.
Once I get my work, my training, or my life in general under control — everything will fall into place.
It can sound logical and hopeful in the moment.
But it is the addiction speaking — not you.
That is why it doesn’t work to “just stop,” no matter how strong your character is.
Loss of control cannot be willed away.
And here is something important we want to say:
people with addiction are not weak.
Quite the opposite.
Most of the people we meet are among the strongest individuals we know.
They fight every day. They start over again and again. They get back up, try, and hope — despite repeatedly experiencing control slipping out of their hands.
Recovery, therefore, is not about trying harder.
Not about rigid discipline or constant self-control.
It is about understanding the disease of addiction, giving the brain and body the right conditions to heal, eating nutritious food that stabilizes both body and mind — and having support when things get difficult.
With the right tools and support, it is possible to live a life where food no longer controls every thought.
A life where control can return, step by step.
A life that feels calmer, freer, and more sustainable.

The New Year – and a Different Path Forward
About New Year’s resolutions, sugar addiction, and why willpower isn’t enough
As a new year approaches, it’s easy to fall into the same thoughts once again:
"I’ll get my act together this time.”
"I’ll eat less.”
"I’ll exercise more.”
“This time it will last.”
For many people living with sugar and carbohydrate addiction these New Year’s resolutions have already been tried – over and over again. With hope in the heart, strong determination, and the best intentions. Yet they often end in disappointment, shame, and the feeling that something must be wrong with me.
It’s not your willpower that’s lacking
The truth is this:
When you have an addiction, the problem is not a lack of willpower, discipline, or character. The addiction is in control. And when that’s the case, solutions based on “just trying harder” simply don’t work.
Another way forward
That’s why we want to talk about something different.
Another path. A path built on understanding addiction as a disease, with the right tools and the right support. A path we have walked ourselves – and one that truly works.
This is not about yet another diet. Not about eating less and fighting harder. It’s about getting help to break the grip of addiction and building a life where food and sugar no longer control everything.
The new year without more broken promises
Maybe it’s time to do something different. Maybe it’s time, for once, to put yourself first.
You deserve to feel well. You deserve calm, freedom, and peace of mind. You deserve real help.
We know it can feel scary and unfamiliar to accept support. But you don’t need to have all the answers, all the motivation, or all the strength right now. It’s enough to be willing to take the first step.
Angelica and Sofia at Recovery By Actionare here for you – with understanding, respect, knowledge, and lived experience. We know what it’s like to live in addiction, and we know that it’s possible to find a way out.
Let this new year be the start of something different than more broken promises. Let it be the beginning of a life where you no longer have to struggle alone.

When it feels really dark – remember that you´re not alone
About sugar and carbohydrate addiction during Christmas and the New Year
This time of year can be especially challenging and heavy for those of us struggling with sugar and carbohydrate addiction. Christmas and the New Year are often filled with expectations, traditions, stress, and strong emotions – all of which can easily trigger cravings and awaken old patterns.
Whether this is your first sugar-free Christmas, whether you have been free from sugar and carbohydrates for some time, or if you are still in the midst of your addiction, we want to begin by saying one thing:
You are not alone.
The darkness, stress, and all the demands can make cravings feel stronger than usual – sometimes so strong that they feel impossible to resist. Many people describe suddenly having put something in their mouth without really understanding how it happened.
This does not mean that you have failed. It means that you have an addiction.
The grief of recovery..
If this is your first or second Christmas in recovery, it is completely natural – and completely okay – to feel grief. For both of us, the first years were filled with sorrow and a strong focus on what we believed we had lost. We grieved everything we thought we would “never be allowed to eat again,” instead of seeing all the positive things that recovery was actually giving us.
Over time, our perspective have changed.
What we gained..
Today, we know that what we have gained is so much more than what we left behind:
- Nourishing, delicious food that truly supports the body
- Calmness and inner peace
- Less shame, anxiety, and low mood
- Less pain and better sleep
- Mental clarity, focus, and energy
- Motivation, meaning, genuine joy, and connection
Honestly – it is worth more than all the sugar and carbohydrates in the world.
For you who are still struggling..
To you who are not yet living in recovery – you who are still stuck in the sugar trap and fighting every day – Christmas can be the time of year when the addiction and obsession completely take over.
Do not see this as a failure or a flaw in your character. It is the disease of addiction that has hijacked and taken control of the brain.
Sometimes we need to reach our lowest point to find the motivation and strength to climb out of the darkness. Perhaps this Christmas will be your turning point.
If you recognize yourself in this, we want you to know this:
There is hope. There is help. There is support – for everyone.
We know how easy it is to feel alone, worthless, broken, and like a failure. How thoughts can endlessly circle around food, sugar, and the next “solution,” while deep down you long for calm, connection, and freedom from the mental obsession.
We have been there ourselves. And because of that, we also know that it is possible to create a different life.
A different life is possible..
A life where everything does not revolve around food and sugar.
A life where focus can gradually shift to what truly matters: relationships, presence, laughter, connection, and meaning.
Change is not about being stricter with yourself or fighting harder. It is about getting the right support, understanding your addiction, and building new habits – in a kind, dignified, and sustainable way.
Angelica and Sofia at Recovery By Actiongreet you with understanding, respect, knowledge, and lived experience. We know it can feel dark right now, but we also know that the light is there – even when it’s hard to see it on your own.
